Increasingly, we are faced with selection processes, through opposition or not, that consider psychotechnical tests as a test in addition to the typical interview . They usually appear in the early stages of the process to discard many candidates for the position and are more than the well-known psychotechnical test that is required to obtain a driver’s license.

The psychometric tests looking to get a psychological profile of the candidate through various performance tests. It is normal, at first, to feel intimidated by this test because until very recently they were the exception rather than the rule.

According to the Decalogue to overcome the psychotechnics that the Center for Financial Studies has prepared , these are some of the things that you should take into account when you face this test.

1. Show ambition

It is a selection process in which you are competing . It’s not just about getting it right but about getting the best score . Try to show your maximum performance.

2. Practice long before the test

Ignorance of what a psychotechnical test is like often reduces performance. Eliminate the surprise factor and find books and exercises to practice before the test. Experts indicate that practicing systematically with different materials can improve up to 30%.

3. Trust yourself

Self-confidence is related to self-efficacy . If you have practiced and you know what you are up against, it is totally counterproductive to face the exam with a negative attitude .

4. Come to the exam rested and relaxed

Nothing to be the day before until very late reviewing or continuing the practice. If you have been preparing it for a while, it is an attitude that does not make sense and that, to make matters worse, can harm you.

Get enough sleep and avoid stimulants before the test. The clearer your mind, the better.

5. Read the instructions carefully

Read calmly and carefully and make sure you fully understand the instructions to correctly complete the psychotechnical test. Eye! This is especially important if you have to use an optical reading template as each one has its response mode.

6. Before you begin, take an overview

The objective of this step is to form a rough idea of the length, content, possible difficulties … of the test as a whole. It will allow you to better distribute time and accommodate your execution speed.

7. Try to avoid interruptions and distractions

It’s about working at a good speed and safely . It is normal that when you reach the end you have not answered all the questions since they are designed so that only 3% of the candidates complete them at the end of the time that is normally set. It happens a lot when the test tries to measure general intelligence.

8. If a question resists, go to the next

As in life, when we cannot find a solution to something at a certain moment, it is better to move on to the next point than to waste time. It is especially important in psychotechnical tests since, as we have mentioned, this is limited.

If at the end of the exercise you have time to spare, you can go back to that question, but losing several points for getting one does not make sense.

9. Think carefully about the questions you answer at random.

We must bear in mind that, on many occasions, errors deduct points and leaving questions blank does not. Try to avoid answering randomly and leave the question blank if you have no idea what to answer.

10. Answer honestly

Many times when we are facing a psychotechnical test whose objective, more than knowing our performance, is to obtain a profile of our personality , without a doubt, the best option is to be honest.

There is a factor that psychologists are well aware of called social desirability . This leads us to want to show others the best of ourselves even though for this we have to slightly manipulate reality.

It is something normal and that we all do especially when we are in a selection process where we seek to be above many other candidates. For this reason, most of the personality tests have infiltrated questions in order to measure the “lies” of the candidates.

If the results of these questions are very scandalous, the entire profile is invalidated and those in charge of the process immediately discard you .

Implement these tips in your next selection process and you will see how your chances of success increase.
