Thanks to new technologies and the Internet, we live in a world in which we can communicate with many people at high speed, while at the same time we can find out the latest news instantly. This makes our life easier in many aspects, such as when doing our job, but it also implies a greater number of factors that require our attention instantly, creating an increase in nervousness and making it difficult, sometimes, to find the right tranquility that we need for the well-being of our mind.
Therefore, it is normal that sometimes we do not know how to deal with situations of great stress and give more negative or abrupt responses than we would like. Being under so much pressure, we cannot think well what we are going to say, so that we cannot hurt the other person’s feelings. Thus, being sincere does not always imply having to hurt others, but we must learn to say things in a respectful way, both for the other person and for ourselves, so that we can feel good at all times, without hurt third parties .
What does it mean to be tolerant?
Surely, on many occasions, you have had to deal with people or situations with which you did not quite feel comfortable. Maybe it was because of work or family, but you had to endure at that moment, without being able to flee from the situation or the other person . However, for family or work reasons it is possible that you could not leave the place, so you should have put on your best face, in order not to lose your job or the rest of the family you value.
At that moment, you were not only dealing with a difficult situation, but surely you have had to put up with some comments and attitudes that do not match your personality or your way of thinking. This means that you have had to use tolerance or be tolerant, that is, respect the way of being or opinion of other people, without trying to impose your own. You must understand that we are all different , so we must tolerate that others think and act as they want , as long as this does not negatively affect you or the people around them.
How can I be more tolerant or have greater tolerance?
At times, you may find it impossible to put yourself in this person’s shoes or think as he or she thinks. Then, it will be much more difficult for you to be tolerant with them, since their opinion will be totally incomprehensible and will make it very difficult for you to work or live together. Many parents are not tolerant enough with their children and they try to impose some facts and attitudes on them that can hurt them a lot and that do not allow them to be themselves and grow normally and happily .
Therefore, the empathy is one of the fundamental values when we can be more tolerant. The fact of being able to put yourself, imaginatively, in the mind and place of another person will allow you to be more tolerant, since you will understand that not all of us see the world or think in the same way and that all opinions must always be respected, always and when they do not harm or limit the freedom of others. Although you could never see or feel this way, understanding that other people can help you to be more tolerant and to live with less fear or resentment of the unknown or of what you do not fully understand.
Being aware of our own opinions and shortcomings can also help us to be more tolerant. If we question our own values we can realize that perhaps we do not have the absolute truth in hand and that opinions can always be very different. Therefore, being more humble with our own thinking and recognizing our mistakes will help us to better understand others, to be able to put ourselves in their place and not judge them before knowing that each of us is free to think as we want, because we are fighting our own battle and we don’t always let others know.
Finally, the fact of having traveled, lived with other cultures, or having met many people can help you to be more tolerant. The more people you meet, the better you will understand that there are many ways of thinking, especially if you meet other individuals of different cultures, religions or ethnicities . It will be then that you can be even more tolerant and you can learn to live with people who think differently from yours, respecting their ideas, with peace and serenity as we all deserve. Tolerance is key to the well-being of a country and society, but this tolerance can only be achieved by moving away hatred and fear of the unknown, fostering empathy and respect at all ages and having a will to respect all human beings, regardless of their origin and other defining features of the person.
